I haven’t read Dune, so I won’t comment on the differences, but after reading the descriptions of Dune and its sequels, it doesn’t surprise me that Tolkien was not a fan. More than likely he was influenced in that response by his strong Catholic faith and by his desire, through fantasy, to write a British mythology for a people (he felt) had none.
